SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is an aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide that localises to the inner mitochondrial membrane. What distinguishes it from other mitochondria-directed compounds is that its accumulation does not depend on membrane potential - it reaches its target in preparations where the potential has collapsed, which is precisely the condition many bioenergetics models are designed to create.
Its studied binding partner is cardiolipin, the phospholipid that organises electron transport chain complexes within the inner membrane and whose oxidation is associated with cristae disruption.
