SS-31 10mg research overview
SS-31, also referred to as elamipretide, is a water-soluble aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide with an unusual targeting property: it concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane without depending on membrane potential to get there. Most cationic compounds accumulate in mitochondria because the membrane is charged, which means their targeting collapses exactly when a model has damaged mitochondria. SS-31 does not share that limitation, and that is the main reason it appears so widely in bioenergetics research.
The binding partner studied is cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane and required for the structural organisation of the electron transport chain complexes. Published work has examined the effect of that association on cristae architecture, electron transport efficiency, ATP production and reactive oxygen species generation. Models of ischemia-reperfusion, mitochondrial myopathy and age-related bioenergetic decline all draw on it.
This is the 10mg vial.
