KPV research overview
KPV is a tripeptide of lysine, proline and valine corresponding to the C-terminal fragment of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone. Its research interest comes from an unusual property for a fragment: it retains a substantial part of the anti-inflammatory activity attributed to the full alpha-MSH molecule while lacking the pigmentation activity that the intact peptide carries through MC1R.
That separation is what makes KPV useful as a laboratory tool. Published work has examined its effect on NF-kappaB and MAPK signaling, its transport into intestinal epithelial and immune cells via the PepT1 transporter, and its behaviour in colitis and mucosal inflammation models. Because it appears to act intracellularly rather than solely at the cell surface, it is often included in study designs that need to distinguish receptor-mediated from intracellular anti-inflammatory effects.
